John.. great podcast as always!!! I don’t do any rides on my bike outside and instead just do trainer rides except for short super local rides like in front of where I live. (side note..there was a local bike fondo two weeks ago and someone got mad in a truck and drove into a four bicyclists killing one and the driver drove off.. horrible). I have found that 4.5 hours for me on the trainer equals 112 miles. Its harder on the trainer… there is no fluff time.. going downhill/stop signs/lights/etc.. so this year’s goal is to 5 hours with half of that time at 140 heart rate (which is my maf rate), and the other at 150 for my A race next year. You mentioned you go all out for a minute then rest for a minute. I do 3 minutes at 155 then rest for 3 minutes and do that for a few times at the end of the trainer ride which taxes the zone 3 and 4 rather than at zone 5. Also if you have a tt bike, I get it ready go out on my street and do a 30 second burst for a strava segment a few times which mimics what you do but is on the road. ps.. I saw 2 great billy yang videos on youtube: “Western States 100 Window seat 008” and “before your next 100.”
