Something Wonky This Way Comes

At some point you knew this had to happen right? I mean, for everyone that has followed this blog and knows me “in the flesh” (heh heh heh) they also know I end up getting injured at some point every year. This one is different though. This did not happen this year. It has its roots back to 1992.

The Year of The Cancer …

At least that’s what the specialist I saw thinks …

To let you in on everything, since the late 80’s to early 90’s I have had issues with my joints stiffening and swelling. Back then it was an annoyance and did not really affect what I could do much. Recently though it has gotten much worse, ending last Friday with my right hand swelling up to the point it was unusable. But, even at that point I was hopeful that it would last a day and be done, but that wasn’t to be. It last until Tuesday and I finally caved and went to see a specialist.

The appointment was Thursday afternoon, and as always happens, by the time I got there I had no symptoms. My hands and wrists are always a bit stiff so I am used to that, but I went any way. She reviewed my symptoms, asked me a lot of questions, and poked and prodded me (which to be honest felt kind of good, like a mini massage). Then came the news….

“I need to get some blood work done on you, and I want you to get x-rays on your hands, wrists, ankles, and lower back. It feels like you have degenerative arthritis, but we need to confirm it with the blood and pictures”

Great … it was actually what I expected, and what Jennifer has been telling me for awhile, but not something I needed to hear. Especially since degenerative cannot be “cured” and I am staring 9 months of training for my first Ironman dead in the face. It has such vague ways that this happened also … since I have had it since the late 80’s it could be from repetitive climbing up and down ladders in the Navy for ten years, old football injuries, obesity, bad diet, etc. The list goes on and on.

But, ya know, at least I will know what the issue is and can deal with it. I will know that the lower back pain I have been feeling is not because I haven’t trained right. There is a reason, and once we find out the reason than we can find out how to deal with it and work around it.

It’s a step …

Stay tuned …
