ExOrcising the Demons

Man is that picture scary. That is one movie that, to this day, creeps me out when I watch it, but it’s one of my all time favorites. So there ya go.
I was thinking about how exercise and training has become for me a sort of exorcism of demons that have been chasing me a long time. It’s what gets me out there even when I am the most down, because I know if I get my butt out of the chair, or out of bed, and get on the bike, no matter how much I feel like it’s the last thing I want to do, by the time I am finished I feel 100 times better than I did before.
Bad day at work?  Pound those pedals man!
Bored out of your skull and just overall feeling unchallenged? Hit the road with Alice Cooper cranked to 11.
Alice knows. Alice understands.
I have such sights to show you!
The stress is like too many little pin point needles sticking in your flesh all over your body. There is no escape from it at work, or at home. The job is boring. The home life unfulfilling. You spend 80% of your day thinking about ways to escape the monotony. This is where people who do triathlons, running, cycling, cross fit,  and a myriad of other activities find their centers.
We don’t drink. Well, some of us do but I find it counter productive to what I am trying to accomplish so don’t indulge for the most part. I will have the occasional beer after a race, but being drunk is stupid to me. I did that when I was a kid. I’m no longer a kid.
We don’t do drugs, with the exception of the bottles of Advil and other NSAIDs littering our counter tops.
If you ask a normal triathlete, especially one that has come to it later in their life like I have, why they do it, you may get a number of different answers. But the one thing they all have in common, at the bottom level is the same: “I Have To”.
Those three words mean different things to different people, but it always boils down to that.
I Have To because if I didn’t I would go insane…
I Have To because I cannot stand to think about the hole in my roof I cannot afford to fix any more…
I Have To because I am tired…
I Have To because if family history proves correct I only have about 20 more years and I want to live them healthy as I can …
I Have To …. because I HAVE TO

Alice totally knows! And so does Ozzy! And Eminem! And Michael Mcdonald. Er. Ok, maybe not Michael Mcdonald, but I do love him.
