Open Water Swim #1

Ok … so today was the first official open water swim … and as expected I sucked.

The water was freezing and I don’t do well with cold water. Even with wet suits it took everyone by suprise (plus it was 8 AM and we are use to the Gulf being bath water temperate). The current was strong pushing South, and being the moron that I am when we hot the water I headed straight to the buoy and not left, so by the time I got there I was pushed FAR to the South and was basically toasted. Had a slight panic attack and HR hit 202, but then realized that I was wearing what basically is a life preserver, so I rolled onto my back and lightly stroked toward shore, getting there with minimal trouble other than scaring the life out of a couple of teammates (Sorry Jenny). The added problem of not having the ability to see at all without glasses added to the panic. I will have to work that out somehow.

The bike and run portion equally sucked due basically to the swim fiasco. Chalk it up to lesson learned, and now know I am going to have to get in the open water quite a bit to get a feel and comfort with it. It was like the first time in the pool, and that got better, so I am cautiously optimistic.

On the other side, it was a really pretty sunrise:
